When most people think of camping in Australia, they picture long summer days, beach swims and warm nights under the stars. But the truth is, every time of year offers something special, and winter might just be one of the most underrated seasons to get out there.
From June through to September, camping across Australia takes on a whole new feel. We’re talking crisp mornings, quiet parks, clear skies and those perfect campfire nights. It’s a slower, more peaceful way to travel, and with fewer crowds, you often get the best spots all to yourself!
Chasing the Sun? Head North ☀️
If you’re not quite ready to embrace the cold, winter is the perfect excuse to head north. Queensland and northern Western Australia come into their prime this time of year, with warm days, blue skies and ideal camping conditions.
From coastal stays to tropical escapes, it’s the perfect way to keep that summer feeling going a little longer. It’s also one of the best times to explore these regions, with more comfortable temperatures and great conditions for getting outdoors.
Ready for the Chill? Head South ❄️
For those who don’t mind a bit of cold, southern Australia puts on an incredible show in winter. New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia offer some of the most beautiful camping landscapes in the country during the cooler months.
The campsites come alive with misty mornings, dramatic scenery and crisp, sunny days followed by cool, clear nights. Cold camping makes for some wonderful stories and incredible memories!
Top Tips for Cold Weather Camping ????
Camping in winter is all about preparation, and a few small changes can make a big difference:
• Bring a warm sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures
• Use a high R value sleeping mat to keep the cold out from the ground (Anaconda has some great options!)
• Layer up with thermals, fleece and a windproof outer
• Set up camp in a sheltered spot, away from low lying cold areas
• If you’re setting up in the rain (we’ve done it a lot) change into dry clothes as soon as you arrive at camp
• Add a hot water bottle to your sleeping bag before bed, it won’t last all night but it will really help you fall asleep fast!
With the right setup, winter camping is not only comfortable, it’s something you might end up preferring.
